Telecoms in Spain

Telecoms in Spain ?

It is only during the last 20 years has the telecommunication and IT sectors improved and developed quickly in Spain and certainly mainly in and near to Madrid, Barcelona and many of the other major cities in Spain. In fact Malaga is becoming renowned for its telecoms Spain.

However, probably the biggest company in Spain with regard to telecommunications is Telefonica which is the biggest provider of telephone and internet facilities in the country. However before 1998 much of the telecoms Spain was government controlled and it only become liberalized and fully deregulated after this year. Certainly at this time in Spain the products provided by the telecoms sector in Spain was lagging well behind that of its Western Europe partners and by the end of the late 1990's beginning of the 21st Century it came more into line with the average European usage. Also it was during the late 1990's that the growth of internet usage also increased rapidly.

Although Telefonica is the largest phone operator in Spain there are many other companies who are now offering to provide low cost calls from any Spanish fixed line without the user having to change their phone, line or number. So if you are looking for a much cheaper alternative for making calls abroad from Spain then it is wise to shop around before you commit to any particular tariff or provider.

Certainly the average cost for a person to have both a telephone and ADSL into their home can average out at around 50 euros a month and normally the cost of installation will cost anything from 100 euros upwards. However, this all depends on which actual provider of the services you use.

Unfortunately for a long time Telefonica had a near total monopoly with regard to Telecoms Spain and so there was little choice to be had for many users. Yet now there are companies springing up all across Spain which are able to offer you not only ADSL/Broadband internet access but also low cost call services as well. Also you will find that many of these companies now offer a customer service facility which provides someone who can speak English. Unfortunately no longer will you need to ask a friend who speaks better Spanish than you in order to get your telecom problems sorted.
