When you look at Barcelona History, you will find that the city itself was established more than 2,000 years ago and today plays an important role in Spain. It is a major political and economic center for Spain and around 70% of the total Catalonia population reside in or close to it.

It was both the Phoenicians and Carthaginian's who settled close to where Barcelona now is because it was the ideal place for them to have a commercial port. Sometimes you will find that the name of the city comes from a Carthaginian ruler known as Amilcar Barca.

The Romans who then came to the region in the 1st Century BC referred to it as Barcino and if you take a walk round the city, you will still find evidence relating to Roman occupation. However, although Barcelona is now the main city in the Catalonian region of Spain, back before the Romans came Tarragona was the most important city in this area.

Although the Romans remained in the city for well over 400 years in 415 AD, the Visigoths took up occupation. Once again, the name of the city was changed and this time became known as Barcinona.

Through out its life the city of Barcelona has thrived however, it really did prosper during the 11th and 12th Centuries. Certainly, by the end of the 12th Century the city had become as influential in business as the cities of Venice and Genoa were. It is believed that the city become so influential because of its port.
